Scissor Lift Height Guide for Indoor Fit-Out and M&E Work
By Jonah Tan, Equipment Specialist · · 3 min read

Most indoor jobs only need a scissor lift, but renting one that is too small (or too big for the doorway) is a common and expensive mistake. This scissor lift height guide shows how to pick the right size for fit-out and M&E work.
Platform height vs working height
Scissor lifts are sold by working height, which is the platform height plus about 2m (the reach of a person standing on the platform). So an “8m scissor lift” has a platform at about 6m.
To choose, measure the height of the actual work, for example the ceiling grid, cable tray or sprinkler line, then pick a lift whose working height is at or slightly above it.
Scissor lift height guide: quick size table
| Working height | Typical indoor jobs |
|---|---|
| 5.6m – 6m | Shop fit-out, low ceilings, lighting, signage, office M&E |
| 8m | Standard warehouse racking, ceiling services, mall fit-out |
| 10m | Higher ceilings, factory cable trays, ducting |
| 12m – 14m | High-bay warehouses, data centres, atriums |
| Up to 18m | Rough-terrain diesel models for outdoor and large sites |
Check these four things before booking
- Doorways and lifts: measure the narrowest door, ramp and goods lift on the way in. Compact models are narrow enough for most standard doors, but taller machines are wider and heavier.
- Floor loading: on mezzanines, raised floors and suspended slabs, check the floor can take the machine’s weight. Ask us for the machine weight and wheel load.
- Platform load: add up people, tools and materials. Many compact battery models are rated around 230–320 kg, so two workers plus a heavy toolbox and material can be close to the limit.
- Battery or diesel: battery (electric) scissor lifts are quiet, zero-emission and have non-marking tyres, which suits indoor work. Diesel rough-terrain models are for outdoor sites and uneven ground.
Tip: if you need to reach over shelving, equipment or a ledge, a scissor lift won’t do it because it only goes straight up. Look at a small articulated boom instead; our scissor lift vs boom lift guide explains the difference.
Daily charging and runtime
A charged battery scissor lift normally lasts a full working shift of typical stop-start use. Plan a power point on site so the machine can be charged overnight, and switch it off at breaks. Before each shift, run through our scissor lift pre-use inspection checklist.
