Scissor Lift vs Boom Lift: Which One Is Right for Your Job in Johor?
By Jonah Tan, Equipment Specialist · · 4 min read

It’s the most common question we get on WhatsApp: “Do I need a scissor lift or a boom lift?” Scissor lift vs boom lift comes down to three things: how high you need to go, whether you need to reach over anything, and what the ground is like. Here’s a simple way to decide.
The 10-second answer
- Choose a scissor lift if the work is directly above the machine, you need a bigger platform for two people plus materials, and the floor is firm and level. Think ceilings, cable trays, lighting, sprinklers and racking.
- Choose a boom lift if you need to reach out, up and over something, such as a canopy, ledge, pipe rack or drain, or if the work is higher than about 18m.
Scissor lift vs boom lift: how they compare
| Item | Scissor lift | Boom lift |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Straight up only | Up and out; articulated booms also go up and over |
| Working height (our fleet) | 5.6m to 18m | 12m to 56m |
| Platform | Large deck, room for 2 people, tools and materials | Smaller basket, usually 1 to 2 people |
| Outreach | None (some have a short slide-out deck) | Several metres to well over 20m on big telescopic booms |
| Best ground | Firm, level floors; rough-terrain models for outdoor sites | Indoor electric models, or 4×4 rough-terrain for outdoor sites |
| Typical jobs | Ceiling fit-out, M&E, lighting, racking, warehouse maintenance | Facades, steelwork, roofing, signage, high-bay and outdoor structures |
When a scissor lift is the better choice
For most indoor jobs in Johor Bahru factories, warehouses, malls and data centres, a battery scissor lift is the simplest and most efficient option. It’s stable, easy to drive, quiet, and the big platform means less going up and down for tools and materials.
- Ceiling, lighting and sprinkler work
- Cable tray and containment installation in data centre halls in Sedenak, Kulai and Senai
- Warehouse racking and maintenance in Pasir Gudang, Tebrau and Iskandar Puteri
- Shop and office fit-out

When you need a boom lift
If anything is in the way between the machine and the work, or the machine can’t get close to it, you need a boom lift.
- Facade, glazing and cladding work where the base can’t reach the wall
- Reaching over a canopy, drain, fence or parked equipment
- Steel structures, roofs and signage above 18m
- Outdoor sites with uneven ground, like construction projects and port areas in Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Pelepas
Not sure which type of boom? Read telescopic vs articulated boom lift, or see our boom lift rental in Johor page.
Quick test: stand where the machine will park and look at the work. If you can draw a straight vertical line from the floor to the work, a scissor lift will usually do. If you’d have to go over or around something, you need a boom.
Three mistakes we see often
- Quoting the building height instead of the work height. Tell us how high the actual work is. Working height is roughly platform height plus 2m.
- Forgetting access. Measure doorways, ramps and goods lifts on the way in. A machine that can’t get through the door can’t do the job.
- Ignoring the floor. Raised floors, suspended slabs and soft ground all have limits. Ask us for the machine weight and check before booking.
Still not sure?
Send us a photo of the work area, the working height and your site location on WhatsApp. We’ll tell you which machine fits and quote you, usually the same day. Every machine comes with a valid PMA and is serviced before delivery to Johor, KL & Selangor.
Popular picks from our fleet: the Dingli 12m Electric Scissor Lift for straight-up indoor work, the Dingli 18m Articulating Boom Lift to reach up and over obstacles, and the Dingli 44m Telescopic Boom Lift for maximum height and outreach.
